Understanding Swedish Massage
What is Swedish Massage?
Massage generally necessitates working on and manipulating the body with pressure through diverse techniques, depending on the type of massage being given. Intended treatment areas of the body may include muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, skin, joints, or other connective tissue, as well as lymphatic vessels, or organs of the gastrointestinal system. Massage can be delivered with the hands, fingers, elbows, knees, forearm, or feet.
The formal definition of Swedish massage is the manipulation of the shallow, as well as the deeper, layers of muscle and connective tissue, using a variety of techniques, to enhance function, aid in the healing process, decrease muscle reflex activity, inhibit motor-neuron excitability, encourage relaxation and well-being, and also as a recreational activity.
The term massage has its roots in several languages from which it can be translated as:
µ Greek – kneading
µ Arabic – gently pressing
µ French – friction or kneading
µ Latin – to knead dough
In other parts of the world, whole therapeutic disciplines have been developed which emphasize the benefits of touch and massage – shiatsu in Japan, huna in Hawaii, Ayurvedic treatments in India (including Indian head massage), all with their own distinctive styles and methods of application.
In the world of massage there exists a variety of styles – everything from Swedish massage to Lymphatic massage, all tailored to produce very specific results. One such massage technique, Swedish massage, has continued to increase in popularity, due in part to its ability to release tremendous amounts of tension in a world where tension rules supreme.
The aim of this course is to teach you, the student, about the basics of Swedish massage, the appropriate movements, and anatomy and physiology as it relates to this course and sequences for general massage routines and a full body relaxation Swedish massage.
