How the Oils Work

In the Therapy Angel Luna Online Studies Introduction to Aromatherapy course we briefly touched on this subject, but if you are to become a professional Aromatherapist you need to be fully conversant with this to help tailor your treatments accordingly.

Inhalation
Aromas stimulate the olfactory nerves at the back of the nose, which send messages to the olfactory bulb which is in the third ventricle of the brain (the limbic system). This part of the brain looks after our thirst, hunger and sex drives.

The pituitary gland and the hypothalamus are both situated in the same area with responsibility for the release of hormones into our systems that control body functions and release emotions and memories.  So stimulating these nerves can have a direct effect on the body and the mind.  The pituitary gland is head of the endocrine system and regulates the production of hormones by all glands.

The hypothalamus is part of the neurological system that controls the autonomic nervous system, ie controls all the involuntary muscles such as the heart, lungs etc. It also works with the pituitary gland to regulate female sex hormones and is related to the control of the appetite.

So the inhalation of essential oils has a powerful effect on the hormones in the endocrine system and is particularly useful in the treatment of hormonal conditions.

Absorption

Essential oils that are absorbed into the skin go directly into the blood stream; so this can be achieved in many ways such as in the bath/shower, compress, massage and applied neat onto the skin. Inhalation of oils can also be absorbed through the lungs as they enter into the bloodstream in the surrounding blood vessels.

Essential oils go directly into the bloodstream and boost the levels of vitamins, minerals, proteins and acids that are naturally produced in the body.  They are really clever in that they seek out where the body is deficient in some way help with the chemical balance.  Additionally essential oils that are absorbed through the skin can trigger our immune system by locating molecules in the body and sending a signal to our cells to attack and invade organisms.

What you do need to be aware of is that the absorption rates vary in individuals and the oils. Although it only takes a minute for the oil to penetrate into the skin, the absorption rate varies from the bloodstream and into the relevant organs depending on the size, circulation and general health of the individual – which can be from 70 minutes to 6 hours.  It might be useful for you to record on the treatment card how the client felt soon after and then following the treatment.

The body then gets rid of the oil through urine, faeces, perspiration and exhalation which can take from 3 to 14 hours.  It is believed that the oils do not leave toxins when expelled unlike more traditional type medicines.

Room Burner (oil burner, diffuser and vaporiser)

Room burners are specially made for use with essential oils, there any many different retail outlets that offer them in different shapes, themes, sizes and designs.  However, a couple of useful tips: make sure the bowl element of the burner is fairly deep; the candle chamber is large and has sufficient ventilation to allow the excess heat to escape.  The base of the burner should be thick, or have a raised rim to life the centre of the base from the surface to avoid unnecessary damage.  A glazed burner does not crack, burn or stain and easy to keep clean – I personally had a beautiful clear glass burner that broke because I had forgotton to refill it with water - so this is always something to take into account.  Night candles should be used, and to speed up the aroma process add a little warm  water to the bowl.

This particular system is really good for psychological conditions, headaches and respiratory problems and good for airborne viruses and bacteria.  I personally like a burner with added lavender essential oil after a long day at work as it helps me to chill and wind down.  The obvious other benefit is that it makes any room smell nice.

What is ESP
Extra-sensory perception (ESP) refers to any phenomena in which one gains information through means other than the recognized physical senses. ESP is therefore a broad category. Though ESP has never been scientifically proven and has numerous critics and sceptics, many laboratory test results have strongly favoured the existence of ESP, and many people claim personal experience with it. ESP includes such phenomena as telepathy, out-of-body experiences, clairvoyance or remote viewing, precognition or seeing the future, aura reading, and other instances of intuition and knowledge acquired without the use of the physical senses.
The field of study that deals with ESP, known as parapsychology, was developed by J. B. and Louisa Rhine at Duke University in the 1930s. The Rhines popularized the terms ESP and psi, the hypothetical agent through which the mind experiences ESP. They also introduced the use of Zener cards, designed by psychologist Karl Zener, to test ESP in the laboratory. The Zener cards consist of a deck of 25 cards with five different symbols, and ESP is tested by recording the accuracy of the test subject’s guesses about the symbols on cards he or she cannot see.
Though many laboratory experiments suggest that ESP is a real phenomenon, none are definitively conclusive, and many more have been unsuccessful. Critics complain that the experiments favoring ESP were conducted with improper methodology. ESP is, by its nature, difficult to test, since there is little consensus over how it works or what exactly would prove its existence. Few people are truly disinterested when it comes to ESP.

Interestingly, some laboratory tests on ESP found that those who believe in psi are more likely to score above chance when guessing Zener card symbols, while those who do not believe in psi often score below chance. Another interesting result showed people in a relaxed state of mind, such as hypnosis, to make accurate guesses about Zener cards twice as often as chance would indicate, while those who are not hypnotized tend to score around chance.The information today is about the use of ESP, another interesting subject.

Alternative medicine is defined as any health practice that takes the place of, or is incompatible with, conventional Western medicine. Distinction must be made between alternative medicine and complementary medicine. Complementary medicine may involve non-traditional medical practices, but is undertaken along with traditional healing approaches. Alternative medicine implies using only non-traditional methods.

Crystal Healing is the practice of using crystals and gemstones to heal, energise and protect the mind and body. The gemstones used in crystal therapy can also work to restore balance, clarity and natural vibrational energies that have been compromised or depleted in a patient. Why Aromatherapy is so popular today

The popularity of essential oils continued to develop through to the early 19th century, with Lavender being the most used essential oil.  However for many years the Art of Aromatherapy became less popular as an alternative therapy, but the essential oils were still very much used in perfume making.  The resurgence of interest increased when people started to want other purer and more natural forms of treatment.  This was also related to the work of Professor Renee Gattefosse in France during the First World War when he started using Lavender, Chamomile and Lemon essential oils on wounded French soldiers.

Gattefosse started the term `aromatherapie’ to describe the use of essential oils for therapeutic purposes.  His work continued with Dr Jean Valnet who wrote a book called Aromatherapie. Marguerite Maurey translated both the works of Professor Gattefosse and Dr Jean Valnet into formulas and recipes that her husband used on his patients. He produced practical evidence about the use and benefits of essential oils.  Marguerite spent a great deal of time in the UK teaching a whole new generation of aromatherapists who continue to practice this form of holistic therapy today.

History of Palmistry

It is thought that Palmistry began in India and first spread to China and Japan, arriving in Europe from India with the Gypsies in the 14th century, where they combined their clairvoyance with their knowledge of Palmistry.

Palmistry details both your past and your future; everything major that has happened in your life is in your hands. The dominant hand (the one you write with) describes events that have happened, and what you can expect in the future. The non-dominant hand shows your potential and the things you wish for. But remember these lines can change over time.

Different Hand Shapes

It is important to remember that Palmistry shows TENDENCIES and not a fixed and unalterable fate.

The first thing you should be aware of is your own instincts. Make mental notes with regard to the appearance of the person you will be reading for, as this will be your starting point. It is important for you to study the different hand shapes, as they are a very important part of palm reading.  By learning these you will already be able to tell a lot about the person. It is interesting to notice how the hand is offered to you for a reading.

If the person holds out their hand cupped with the thumb touching one of the fingers, this is a closed hand and would indicate that the person hides a large part of their personality. But if the hand is offered straight with the thumb away from the fingers, this is an open hand and the person would be friendly and happy to have you view their palm.

Also notice how the fingers are situated when the palm is held out to you.  For instance if the fingers are spread out this will show they are generous and receptive. It the fingers are held together they would be practical and cautious with money.

Take their handshake for example. If it is a firm handshake then that should indicate someone who is open and friendly. If it were a painful experience, for example, too hard and fierce, that would make you think this is a dominant macho person, but really it shows someone with an inferiority complex. While a handshake that is limp, would suggest that they really have no interest in meeting you.
