Reiki Clinical Intervention

Reiki as a clinical intervention in oncology nursing practice
Clinical Journal of Oncology Nursing, June, 2008 by Bossi. Larraine M., Mary Jane Ott, Susan DeCristofaro

Oncology nurses and their patients are frequently on the cutting edge of new therapies and interventions that support coping, health, and healing. Reiki is a practice that is requested with increasing frequency, is easy to learn, does not require expensive equipment, and in preliminary research, elicits a relaxation response and helps patients to feel more peaceful and experience less pain. Those who practice Reiki report that it supports them in self-care and a healthy lifestyle. This article will describe the process of Reiki, review current literature, present vignettes of patient responses to the intervention, and make recommendations for future study.

The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) lists Reiki as an energy therapy in its classification of complementary and alternative therapies. Energy therapy is defined as one that focuses on energy fields within the body and electromagnetic fields, which focus on fields outside of the body. Reiki is a Japanese word that is a combination of two characters (Rei) meaning universal and (Ki) meaning life-force energy. Reiki is an ancient healing art involving the gentle laying on of hands, well suited for nurses who provide hands-on care for patients in so many different ways.

Philosophy of Care
As in nursing, Reiki therapy is one of practicing the art of presence and compassion. Reiki is not a religion but a philosophy of care that is described by the following principles taught to Reiki practitioners.
* Relate to patients’ core or essence, not personality.
* Listen without judging patients’ actions.
* Be willing not to know or understand the “why’s” associated with patients’ presentation.
* Let go of viewing patient’s responses following Reiki treatment as the practitioner’s personal achievement (Rand, 1998).
Nurses often recognise the importance of entering and leaving another’s “space” or energy field and the impact that the presence of one person can have on another. They understand the pattern of patients’ energy and use as they care for patients and are licensed to provide treatments that often involve touching patients as a part of the care they provide. In doing so, nurses witness the effects of changes that occur in a patient’s energy field during routine nursing care, such as hanging an IV medication, taking a pulse, or teaching about self-care. Reiki practice takes these ideas a step further by acknowledging and working with the vital energy (ki) that patients and nurses possess and merging it with the universal healing energy (rei) through a specific intention of assisting the healing process.

Reiki Treatment
The serious study and use of subtle energy in nursing and other disciplines is receiving increased attention in the literature and in clinical practice (Engebretson, 1998). For example, the International Society for the Study of Subtle Energy and Energy Medicine hosts leading scientists for an annual meeting to discuss and disseminate research findings about energy medicine. Reiki, a type of energy healing, assists nurses in working with the body’s energy to achieve or restore a state of greater balance and harmony. Mikai Usui, a teacher from Japan, developed specific treatment procedures in 1920 after he studied and meditated about healing practices (Lambert, 2000; Petter, 1997; Usui & Petter, 2003). Trained practitioners use a light touch, placing hands in a systematic way to connect the universal life-force energy with a person’s own innate power to heal. Reiki is performed with the recipient fully clothed and either lying down or sitting in a chair. A full treatment may be as long (or as short) as needed; however, it usually lasts 45-90 minutes. A full treatment generally consists of placing the hands in 12 positions on the head and front and back of the torso, and some practitioners also add the knees and feet. The recipient can be awake, asleep, or even unconscious when receiving a treatment. During Reiki treatments, Reiki energy is made available to assist in the body’s efforts to reach a greater equilibrium (Miles & True, 2003). Generally, Reiki is accepted as low risk, and contraindictions and adverse events have not been reported (Miles & True). Recipients report a variety of individual responses to their experiences of Reiki energy, which are included in this article.
Learning to Be a Reiki Practitioner
Anyone can learn to become a Reiki practitioner through a process that combines new knowledge, practice with the form, and understanding of a Reiki session and a series of attunements or initiations that enhance the flow of Reiki energy within a practitioner, administered by a Reiki master or teacher. The process often produces a positive shift in the self-image of the emerging practitioner.Training is divided into three levels (I, II, and III). Initiation to each level celebrates the beginning of study, not the attainment of all necessary learning (Miles, 2003). The training for Reiki level I is a combination of didactic and clinical experience that focuses on the physical process of hand positions used by the practitioner for the delivery of the gentle Reiki energy. Reiki level II adds emotional and spiritual healing attunements with the use of specific symbols that allow the practitioner to offer long-distance Reiki. Reiki level II training increases the practitioner’s ability to listen to her or his own inner voice or intuition. Although some teachers will combine levels I and II together in a weekend workshop, the authors require students to practice doing self-treatments and treatments of others for a period of three to six months before moving from level I to level II training. The third level of Reiki training prepares the practitioner as a master and then as a teacher, usually by having the practitioner work closely with a master practitioner over time (Lubeck, Petter, & Rand, 2001; Miles, 2006). Continuing education is recommended for all practitioners in the form of Reiki sharing or Reiki practice groups. At the authors’ institutions, this involves a combination of giving and receiving treatments as well as opportunities to discuss research with a mentor and colleagues.

How to read Runes

A Brief History – Runes

The word “ rune “ actually mean’s mystery, magic, secret, or whisper. They are an ancient Germanic alphabet that has been dated back to the 3rd century.  It is thought that they were first used for divination purposes and later for writing and record keeping.

Legend has it that Odin, the Norse High God of the Aesir, hung from the world tree (Yggdrasil), impaled on his own spear for nine days and nights in order to gain the knowledge of runes.  When the runes appeared below him, he reached down and picked them up, and the runic knowledge gave him power. He later passed on this knowledge to the Vanir goddess Freya. She in turn taught him the magic of Seidr. Heimdall the god who guarded the Rainbow Bridge taught the Runes to mankind.

The death of the runes as magical instruments occurred in 1639. The official laws of Iceland banned them, and any people found with runes in their possession were burned alive!

It is fascinating to think that as long ago as the 3rd century, runes had been used for major decision-making.  That their belief in them was so strong gives them a sense of awe.  I have great reverence for my stones and always treat them with the utmost respect. I truly believe that if you have a real affinity with your runes, they will speak to you.

Creating you own set

Today the use of rune stones is again becoming immensely popular. With many attractive sets available, (I personally have a beautiful amethyst set, which was given to me by a dear friend).

It can also be very satisfying to make your own set.  These can be of wood with the glyphs burned onto them, or as simple as flat pebbles from the beach with the glyphs either engraved or marked with a permanent pen.  Whatever style you choose, making the runes yourself will certainly help you to become familiar with them, and getting to know your stones is very important.  A little imagination is all that it takes.  I keep my runes in a velvet pouch, inside a beautiful box.

Lending your runes

Once you have become familiar with your own set, I think you will find it very difficult to lend these out.  To me there is something very personal about my runes. I feel that my own personality is around these stones and strangely I am very protective over them.

The Blank Rune

Again this is down to the individual.  There is no evidence to suggest that there ever has been a blank rune.  You can of course delve into this a little deeper if you wish; my thoughts on this are not to include it in my castings.  I will however give you the meanings, as I know them, so you can make you own decision on this.  But my suggestion to you is that if you happen to have a set with a blank rune then keep it and use it, as a replacement should you need to.

While others prefer to pick the runes individually out of the bag and form a spread.

Day rune - A good way to get an answer for a certain question.  Simply pick a single rune each day.
There are several different spreads to choose from and I will explain a few of these later on.

Rune Diary

It is always a good idea to keep a rune diary, as It is important to keep a record of all of your readings, weather you think they are good or bad. This will also help you to become more familiar with your runes.

Rune casting

The runes have become a great source of inspiration for many, and for some they provide a guide for daily life. It is more a means of analysing the path one is on, and a likely outcome.

The future is not fixed it changes with everything we decide to do.  So if you don’t like the prediction then you can always change your path.

Rune stone’s are an Oracle from which you can seek advice.  Sometimes they may not seem clear, and this is where your own intuition will be needed.  These are the times when the runes will guide you to the answers. They work best if you focus on your current situation, and ask a specific question.

You will need of-course your own set of rune stones a cloth of your choice on which to lay your stones, and one that is for this purpose only.  A quiet place where you will not be disturbed is ideal.

Healing yourself

Facing Problems in Healing the Hidden Self by lazysurfer2

If a challenging situation happens in an individual’s life when he or she begins to develop negative thoughts. When this happens, the person often starts to blame self or others, which the self-denial could result to an emotionally disturbance.

In fact, these therapies have motivated people’s thinking both spiritually and mentally. The hidden self when motivated can assist with curing the mind and body devoid of any side effects.

Other natural healing solutions have proved some worth as well. Some of the oldest, yet new solutions include biofeedback. Biofeedback works with monitoring systems to regulate body functions, such as the heart rate, blood pressure, et cetera. According to experts if we have the power to regulate our body functions, thus it can assist us with self-healing the hidden self.

Neurofeedback is another alternative that has proven to assist with healing the hidden self. Neurofeedback programs have encouraged motivation, inspiration, relaxation, and much more. In fact, we are encouraged to relax often to give the body and mind room to heal.

Despite that all of these natural products, programs and solutions has proven to assist with healing the hidden self, it is in fact proven that meditation is ultimately the better choice. Of course, some people find it difficult to meditate, so they will use other solutions, such as the Neurofeedback to encourage relaxation and meditation.

Another natural source is the aromatherapy solutions for healing. Aromatherapy has several types of aromas, which are intended for particular purposes. You can go online to discover the fragrances. Moreover, which aromas can assist you with healing self?

Moreover, you may benefit from subliminal learning. By learning how to explore your subliminal mind you can accomplish any goal you set for yourlf.se

Chromotherapy - colour therapy

Chromotherapy, sometimes called colour therapy is an alternative medicine method which involves a therapist trained in chromotherapy using colour and light to balance energy for physical, emotional, spiritual, or mental problems. Of course it should not be confused with Light Therapy, which has been proven to relieve things like major depressive disorder.
Chromotherapists believe there is a scientific basis for their practice, in that colours bring about emotional reactions in people. A standard method of diagnosis is the use of “Luscher’s colour test”, developed by Max Luscher (1923) in the early 1900s. When performing chromotherapy, colour and light is applied to specific areas and accupoints on the body. Because colours get associated with both positive and negative effects in color therapy, specific colors and accurate amounts of color are deemed to be critical in healing. Some of the tools used for applying colors are gemstones, candles, wands, prisms, coloured fabrics, bath treatments, and coloured glasses or lenses. Therapeutic color can be administered in a number of ways, but is often combined with hydrotherapy and aromatherapy to heighten the therapeutic effect.
History
Colour therapy is possibly rooted in Ayurveda, an ancient form of medicine practiced in India for thousands of years. Other historic roots are attributed to Chinese and ancient Egyptian culture. In traditional Chinese medicine, each organ is associated with a colour. Ancient Egyptians built solarium-type rooms, which could be fitted with coloured panes of glass. The sun would shine through the glass and flood the patient with colour. As late as the nineteenth century, European smallpox victims and their sickrooms were draped with red cloth to draw the disease away from the body.

Avicenna (980-1037) viewed color to be of vital importance in diagnosis and treatment, made significant contributions to chromotherapy in The Canon of Medicine. He wrote that “Color is an observable symptom of disease” and also developed a chart that related colour to the temperature and physical condition of the body. His view was that red moved the blood, blue or white cooled it, and yellow reduced muscular pain and inflammation. He further discussed the properties of colors for healing and was “the first to establish that the wrong color suggested for therapy would elicit no response in specific diseases.” As an example, “he observed that a person with a nosebleed should not gaze at things of a brilliant red color and should not be exposed to red light because this would stimulate the sanguineous humor, whereas blue would soothe it and reduce blood flow.

7 main chakras

7 main chakras

Chakras and their corresponding positions in the human body
Health is contingent upon balancing not only our physical needs, but our emotional needs as well. In India, a group of healers versed in Ayurvedic medicine describe colors associated with the seven main chakras, which are, according to their system, spiritual centers in our bodies located along the spine.
There are seven of these chakras and each is associated with a particular organ or system in the body. Each chakra has a dominant color, but these colors may become imbalanced. If this happens it can cause disease and other physical ramifications. By introducing the appropriate color, these maladies can be fixed. Below is a description of each chakra, its corresponding color, and the medicinal uses of each.
•    Red: First Chakra: Located at the base of the spine.Used to stimulate the body and mind and to increase circulation.
•    Orange: Second Chakra: pelvis area. Used to heal the lungs and to increase energy levels.
•    Yellow: Third Chakra: solar plexus. Used to stimulate the nerves and purify the body.
•    Green: Fourth Chakra: heart
•    Blue: Fifth Chakra: throat. Used to soothe illnesses and treat pain.
•    Indigo: Sixth Chakra: lower part of the forehead. Used to alleviate skin problems.
•    Violet: Seventh Chakra: top of the head

Palm Reading

reading palms is easy

reading palms is easy

Palm Reading
Palm reading, more technically known as chiromancy, is the art of telling the future or determining something about a person by looking at the palms of their hands. It is an ancient mystic art, with its roots deep in India’s past. In the modern world, palm reading is one of the most common methods of divining, along with astrology.
The earliest known text on palm reading was written by a Hindi sage, Valmiki, in the 3rd millennium BCE. It was entitled “The Teachings of Valmiki Maharshi on Male Palmistry”, and set out many techniques which are used into the modern day. Palm reading then made its way to Egypt, Persia, Tibet, China, and Greece.
It is the palm reading of Ancient Greece, much of it outlined by the philosopher Anaxagoras, which sets the foundation for a great deal of modern palm reading. As a result, in many palm reading sessions, Greek mythological figures will be invoked as representative of various parts of the palm, with that part of the palm reflecting characteristics associated with that god or goddess.
For example, the middle finger is said to represent Athena, and therefore logic and rationality. The tip of the thumb is said to represent Rhea, the Earth goddess, who defied her husband, and therefore one looks to the thumb for a clue to a person’s willpower. The mound near the thumb is represented by Venus, and it indicates a great deal about love. Other areas are said to be ruled by Vulcan, Mercury, Mars, and Apollo.
Most traditions of palm reading focus only on the shapes and lengths of various features of the hands. The two main features looked at are lines and bumps. These lines are usually given names, such as life line or heart line, which indicate their meaning. Intersections of lines and bumps, relationships between their lengths or widths, and depths of creases are all thought to tell the palm reader different things about the person or their future. In some traditions other features, such as the fingernails, the texture of the skin, the flexibility of various joints, and the patterns marked on the skin, are all looked at as well.
The most basic way to appraise a hand in a palm reading session is to determine which of the elements it is associated with. Fire hands generally are rectangular, have short fingers, and have red or pink skin. Water hands have an ovoid palm, long, and long round fingers. Earth hands are broad and square, with thick and rough skin. Air hands are rectangular, have long fingers, and generally have drier skin. The temperament of the person is thought to correlate roughly with the element of their hand, with fiery people having short tempers, high creativity, etc.
There are three major lines looked at in a palm reading session: the life line, the heart line, and the head line. The life line runs from the crease between the thumb and pointer finger down in an arc towards the wrist; it generally gives information on the person’s health, as well as major events that will take place in their life. The heart line runs the length of the top of the palm, from underneath the little finger to above the thumb; it reflects issues of romance, as well as overall happiness or malaise. The head line runs frown beneath the pointer finger towards the opposite edge of the palm; it indicates styles of learning and thinking, and can show whether a person is right- or left-brained.
Although palm reading is considered a pseudo-science by mainstream scientists, it enjoys considerable popularity throughout the world. Small palm reading booths can be found in most cities, with prices ranging widely.

ESP - extra sensory perception

What is ESP
Extra-sensory perception (ESP) refers to any phenomena in which one gains information through means other than the recognized physical senses. ESP is therefore a broad category. Though ESP has never been scientifically proven and has numerous critics and sceptics, many laboratory test results have strongly favoured the existence of ESP, and many people claim personal experience with it. ESP includes such phenomena as telepathy, out-of-body experiences, clairvoyance or remote viewing, precognition or seeing the future, aura reading, and other instances of intuition and knowledge acquired without the use of the physical senses.
The field of study that deals with ESP, known as parapsychology, was developed by J. B. and Louisa Rhine at Duke University in the 1930s. The Rhines popularized the terms ESP and psi, the hypothetical agent through which the mind experiences ESP. They also introduced the use of Zener cards, designed by psychologist Karl Zener, to test ESP in the laboratory. The Zener cards consist of a deck of 25 cards with five different symbols, and ESP is tested by recording the accuracy of the test subject’s guesses about the symbols on cards he or she cannot see.
Though many laboratory experiments suggest that ESP is a real phenomenon, none are definitively conclusive, and many more have been unsuccessful. Critics complain that the experiments favoring ESP were conducted with improper methodology. ESP is, by its nature, difficult to test, since there is little consensus over how it works or what exactly would prove its existence. Few people are truly disinterested when it comes to ESP.

Interestingly, some laboratory tests on ESP found that those who believe in psi are more likely to score above chance when guessing Zener card symbols, while those who do not believe in psi often score below chance. Another interesting result showed people in a relaxed state of mind, such as hypnosis, to make accurate guesses about Zener cards twice as often as chance would indicate, while those who are not hypnotized tend to score around chance. The information today is about the use of ESP, another interesting subject.

Complementary and Alternative Medicine

Complementary and Alternative Medicine
Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) refers to a body of treatment modalities generally considered outside the scope of mainstream medicine. While the term is intended to group these modalities into a single system that supports a holistic approach to health and wellness, some practitioners treat complementary and alternative medicine as two separate components. In other words, complementary medicine is any treatment used in conjunction with conventional therapies, while alternative therapies are used in place of conventional treatments. In fact, the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) recognizes this distinction.
NCCAM also positions complementary and alternative medicine into four primary fields. They are: Mind-Body Medicine, Biologically Based Practices, Manipulative and Body-Based Practices, and Energy Medicine. It also recognizes Whole Medical Systems, which are largely based on established systems of theory and practice originating prior to the advent of allopathic, or conventional Western medicine. Of course, many modalities cross these boundaries and fall under more than one field. Examples of Western-based whole medical systems include homeopathy and naturopathy, while Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine are whole systems that developed in India and China, respectively.
As the name implies, complementary medicine involves the use of healing practices that complement conventional treatments. Often these therapies target an emotional response rather than a biological reaction. For example, aromatherapy is used to influence mood and induce a state of mind that is conducive to healing. This does not mean that aromatherapy doesn’t have “real” physical impact. It simply means that, as a complementary therapy, its benefits may be realized as a contributing factor to the entire scope of treatment.
Alternative medicine, on the other hand, is used instead of conventional therapies. In this model, traditional Western treatments may be bypassed in favour of a more natural and non-invasive methods. For example, the use of herbs and supplements, meditation, guided imagery, and Reiki may be used to help treat cancer..
As the volume of studies that establish the safety and efficacy of complementary and alternative therapies increases, the more the face of conventional health care continues to evolve. As such, many medical practitioners now consider the CAM approach to healing as being part of a bigger component of medical care—integrative medicine. This terminology helps to “integrate” complementary and alternative medicine with conventional treatments rather than separating them from each other.

Holistic Health - alternative therapies

Holistic Health
Holistic health is an approach to health that is concerned with the body as a whole, as opposed to traditional health, which concentrates on illnesses and wellness in specific areas of the body. Subscribers to the holistic approach to health believe that maximum health is obtained when the mind, body and soul are all functioning in the best way possible and are in sync with the environment. The human body is composed of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being. If any of these areas are not working to their full potential, it will affect all of the other areas.

The holistic concept of health and medicine has been around for centuries. Philosophers such as Socrates and Hippocrates spoke of how many factors contributed to a person’s health. Similarly, ancient Chinese and Indian healing traditions followed the same mind, body and soul principles as holistic medicine. However, the word “holistic” was not regularly used until Western societies begin to take interest in alternative medicine in the 1970s.
Holistic health is not a treatment, but instead, a lifestyle composed of multiple types of practices that promote the well-being of the mind, body and soul. Although a holistic approach may be taken with illnesses, which would be the practice of holistic medicine, holistic health practitioners are very concerned with preventive maintenance of a person’s body. They wish to treat any possible symptoms, but are more concerned with the underlying cause of a health issue to prevent reoccurrence.
Types of therapies or treatments that are used to maximize holistic health are herbal medicine, aromatherapy essential oils, colour therapy, crystal healing and Reiki, Ayurvedic medicine, nutrition, stress reductions, and massage. In addition to therapy and treatment, another facet of holistic health is the choices an individual makes on a daily basis. People make choices that ultimately affect their personal well-being.

Some choices people make that can affect their holistic health negatively are deciding to use drugs, smoke cigarettes, consume large amounts of alcohol and engage in unprotected sexual activity. Sugar, caffeine, a bad attitude, high stress and poor self esteem are also believed to have negative impacts on a person’s health. Things that have a negative effect on a person’s health open up that person to illness. Conversely, eating a nutritious diet, getting adequate rest, getting adequate exercise and avoiding sugar, caffeine, drugs, cigarettes, alcohol and unprotected sex is believed to maximize one’s holistic health and to keep them free of illness.

Palmistry - how to read palms/hands
