Effects of Indian Head Massage

Effects of massage on the skin

Massage enhances the skin condition by improving the function of the sebaceous and sweat glands, which keep the skin lubricated, clean, and cool.  Massage helps you have healthy skin.  Massage is exercise for your skin. It works to skin improve blood circulation and relieve stress.  With age blood circulation diminishes. When blood circulation is improved with massage, sufficient oxygen and nutrients are transported to create a healthy epidermis and dermis. When it is remembered that the skin is an organ of respiration as well as perspiration, its increased activity must be regarded as one of the most valuable effects of massage.  It is also noticeable that massage of the skin increases its power to automatically react and so gives it increased ability to defend itself against changes in temperature, weather changes, etc.

Effects of massage on the skeleton.

Massage is capable of influencing such hard structures as the bones, ligaments, and cartilages.  A bone has essentially the same blood supply as its overlying muscles. It is for this reason that the same exercise, which causes increase in the size of a muscle, at the same time, encourages growth in the bone to which the muscle is attached. The bones and joints of people who are addicted to exercise are decidedly larger than those of people who do not use their muscles in excessive exercise. This is especially noticeable in comparing the large, strong hand and knotty knuckles of the man who performs hard labour everyday with the frail and straight, slender fingers of the man who works in an office.  It is known that the red matter of the bones is the blood forming tissue of the body. This gives a new importance to massage, since the acceleration of the circulation of blood through the muscles must improve the nutrition of the bones as well as of the muscles, consequently the blood-making processes are influenced both as regards the quantity of the blood produced and its quality.

Effects of massage on muscles

The blood supply to the muscle is increased during massage bringing fresh oxygen and nutrients and removing waste products such as lactic acid, so massage can help alleviate muscle fatigue.  The muscle is warmed because of the increased blood flow and, because warm muscles contract more efficiently that when cold, the likelihood of injury is reduced.  Massage helps to relieve pain, stiffness and fatigue in muscles as the waste products are removed and normal functioning is quickly restored.  The increased oxygen and nutrients aid tissue repair and recovery of the muscle.
Massage can help the breakdown of fibrositic nodules, also called knots, which develop in a muscle because of tension, injury or poor posture.  They are most commonly found in the shoulder area.  Massage helps to increase the tone of the muscles and delays any wasting away of muscles through lack of use.

Effects of massage on the hair

When massage is repeated on a regular basis, it will help to actually strengthen the roots of the hair, which will help hair growth.  Moisturized hair is less likely to split and break, which is a wonderful benefit.  Massage adds natural lustre and shine to the hair.  Regular massage can help protect hair from environmental toxins and other weather conditions by helping to strengthen the follicles.  In some cases, massage can slow hair loss conditions.  It can be combined with deep breathing for even deeper results.  In some cases, regular massage with appropriate essential oils can help to slow the onset of white or grey strands.

Introduction to Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy has been considered down through the century as a remedy that soothes the body and mind. The remedies are said to relieve symptoms coming from a variety of diseases. In addition, the remedies are claimed to relieve stress, anxiety, nervous tension, and related symptoms. Many people have used aromatherapy, including the French natives, Egyptians, Germans, Brazilians,    Europeans,    Indians,    Canadians,    Americans,    people    in    the Mediterranean lands, and so on. The oils include the scented and essential oils. Online you can find a variety of the oils, including Basil, Cedar wood, celery seed, carrot seed, African Bluegrass oils, bergamot, clove bud and leaf oils, and so on. The oils each have its purpose for healing the body and mind. Before using the oils be sure to read all available instructions before using.
Brief History:
Aromatherapy came from France, which a Frenchman burnt his arm, dipped it in lavender oil, and concluded from the results that essential oils and scented oils are healers. The result delivered ceased the burning, as well there were no apparent scars on his arm. Essential oils and scented oils are aromatherapy oils, which came from living plants. Exceptions include the oils that came from swallowtail butterflies.
The intentions of the oils are to heal the body and mind by relaxing the soul of stress.  Few types  of oils  are  intended to  produce  a  romantic  mood. However, according to reports the best alternative for using aromatherapy comes from massaging the oils into the flesh.
I’ve talked with a masseuse who claims that many of her clients complained, since the oils made them feel drowsy, or put them to sleep. Consequently, the oils must work to relax the body and mind; otherwise the person would not feel drowsy or sleep when the oils are burning. The masseuse also mentioned that the green oils were prone to relax the body and mind, more so than other scents. Now, whether this is true or not would depend on the person and his or her level of stress.
As for aromatherapy creating romantic mood well the fact is down through the years candle lit dinners, candle lit areas, etc have created a romantic mood for many. So we can assume that aromatherapy can also create a romantic mood. The romantic oils include Jasmine. Still, a selection of aromatherapy oils can work as a romantic sparker.

Understand that aromatherapy romantic oils are essential oils. The oils work to create synchronization with the spirit, mind, and body. The oils are said to elevate moods through feeling by producing relaxation affects. The affects are said to enhance well-being, confidence, and openness. According to studies, few people using essential oils experienced a hormonal affect, which increased desire of sexuality.
Which oils for Romance?
The oils available to promote romance  are  the  Patchouli oils,  YLANG YLANG oils, Sandalwood, Jasmine, etc. The oils are said to deliver a strong arousing feeling. The oils work by sending odours that stimulate the moods and mind, which in turn produces an arousing sensation, as well as an awakening yearning. Aromatherapy oils with aphrodisiac ingredients are also    romantic arousers. YLANG,    Lemon    oils, Patchouli,    Rosewood, Eucalyptus, Geranium, and Rosemary are a few of aromatherapy oils, which contain aphrodisiac.  Aphrodisiac Sensual oils  are  oil  that  produces  a romantic mood.

Which oils for massaging?
Distilled oils, which are made from low temperatures and pressure, as well as 100% natural graded A, oils is ideal for romantic massages. According to reviews however, you should dilute the oils in the carrier oil. Carrier oils is said to affect the skin, which produces relaxation. Additional oils include the romance oils. The oils contain cedar wood, clove buds, cinnamon leaf, clary sage, orange, and chamomile.
Yohimbe oils which include the Combinations work by increasing erectile capabilities, libido, and sex drives.

How do I choose the types of oils for different occasions?
You should learn more about the scents and essential oils to make your choice. Lavender oils work to balance, elucidate, soothe, and regularize the body and mind. Eucalyptus oils work to purify, cool, balance, and revitalize the body and mind. Peppermint oils invigorate, refresh, cool, and promote energy whereas Rosemary revitalizes, warms, and clarifies the body and mind. Sweet Orange oils uplift your body and mind, as well as produce a cheerful and stimulating feeling.  Geranium lifts, balance, stabilizes and relaxes the body and mind. Aromatherapy - how does it work?

Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy is the use of volatile plant oils for preventative care, healing and general physical well-being. Although the term aromatherapy was not used until the 20th Century, the foundations of Aromatherapy date back thousands of years and can be traced back through to ancient Roman, Greek, Egyptian and Chinese cultures.

Essential oils can be used in different ways, including massage, bathing and inhalation. When essential oils are inhaled, olfactory receptor cells are stimulated and the impulse is transmitted to the emotional centre of the brain, or “limbic system”. The limbic system is connected to areas of the brain linked to memory, breathing, and blood circulation, as well as the endocrine glands that regulate hormone levels in the body. The properties of the oil, the fragrance and its effects, determine stimulation of these systems. When used in massage, essential oils are not only inhaled, but absorbed through the skin as well. They penetrate the tissues and find their way into the bloodstream where they are transported to the organs and systems of the body. Different oils are thought to act on the body in different ways, having a relaxing, energizing, calming or uplifting effect.
Popular because of its non-invasive nature, aromatherapy is used for a wide range of health problems such as anxiety, stress, insomnia, anxiety and stress related conditions. Many people find it useful in treating arthritic and rheumatoid pain, headaches, and pre-menstrual tension. It is sometimes available in maternity services and is widely used in palliative and cancer care in hospitals and hospices. Some people also use aromatherapy just for its relaxation effects.
Therapists need to be made aware of any health problems the patient may have, particularly cardiac, respiratory, neurological or dermatological conditions, as some essential oils have to be avoided for people with these conditions. There is also the possibility of some essential oils interacting with prescribed medications, so patients should check with their GP as well as informing their therapist of any medication they are taking. Pregnant women are advised to avoid essential oils in the first 16 weeks of pregnancy and some should not be used at all during pregnancy.

Aromatherapy Oils and how they work

How the Oils Work

In the Therapy Angel Luna Online Studies Introduction to Aromatherapy course we briefly touched on this subject, but if you are to become a professional Aromatherapist you need to be fully conversant with this to help tailor your treatments accordingly.

Inhalation
Aromas stimulate the olfactory nerves at the back of the nose, which send messages to the olfactory bulb which is in the third ventricle of the brain (the limbic system). This part of the brain looks after our thirst, hunger and sex drives.

The pituitary gland and the hypothalamus are both situated in the same area with responsibility for the release of hormones into our systems that control body functions and release emotions and memories.  So stimulating these nerves can have a direct effect on the body and the mind.  The pituitary gland is head of the endocrine system and regulates the production of hormones by all glands.

The hypothalamus is part of the neurological system that controls the autonomic nervous system, ie controls all the involuntary muscles such as the heart, lungs etc. It also works with the pituitary gland to regulate female sex hormones and is related to the control of the appetite.

So the inhalation of essential oils has a powerful effect on the hormones in the endocrine system and is particularly useful in the treatment of hormonal conditions.

Absorption

Essential oils that are absorbed into the skin go directly into the blood stream; so this can be achieved in many ways such as in the bath/shower, compress, massage and applied neat onto the skin. Inhalation of oils can also be absorbed through the lungs as they enter into the bloodstream in the surrounding blood vessels.

Essential oils go directly into the bloodstream and boost the levels of vitamins, minerals, proteins and acids that are naturally produced in the body.  They are really clever in that they seek out where the body is deficient in some way help with the chemical balance.  Additionally essential oils that are absorbed through the skin can trigger our immune system by locating molecules in the body and sending a signal to our cells to attack and invade organisms.

What you do need to be aware of is that the absorption rates vary in individuals and the oils. Although it only takes a minute for the oil to penetrate into the skin, the absorption rate varies from the bloodstream and into the relevant organs depending on the size, circulation and general health of the individual – which can be from 70 minutes to 6 hours.  It might be useful for you to record on the treatment card how the client felt soon after and then following the treatment.

The body then gets rid of the oil through urine, faeces, perspiration and exhalation which can take from 3 to 14 hours.  It is believed that the oils do not leave toxins when expelled unlike more traditional type medicines.

Room Burner (oil burner, diffuser and vaporiser)

Room burners are specially made for use with essential oils, there any many different retail outlets that offer them in different shapes, themes, sizes and designs.  However, a couple of useful tips: make sure the bowl element of the burner is fairly deep; the candle chamber is large and has sufficient ventilation to allow the excess heat to escape.  The base of the burner should be thick, or have a raised rim to life the centre of the base from the surface to avoid unnecessary damage.  A glazed burner does not crack, burn or stain and easy to keep clean – I personally had a beautiful clear glass burner that broke because I had forgotton to refill it with water - so this is always something to take into account.  Night candles should be used, and to speed up the aroma process add a little warm  water to the bowl.

This particular system is really good for psychological conditions, headaches and respiratory problems and good for airborne viruses and bacteria.  I personally like a burner with added lavender essential oil after a long day at work as it helps me to chill and wind down.  The obvious other benefit is that it makes any room smell nice.

Aromatherapy Today

Why Aromatherapy is so popular today

The popularity of essential oils continued to develop through to the early 19th century, with Lavender being the most used essential oil.  However for many years the Art of Aromatherapy became less popular as an alternative therapy, but the essential oils were still very much used in perfume making.  The resurgence of interest increased when people started to want other purer and more natural forms of treatment.  This was also related to the work of Professor Renee Gattefosse in France during the First World War when he started using Lavender, Chamomile and Lemon essential oils on wounded French soldiers.

Gattefosse started the term `aromatherapie’ to describe the use of essential oils for therapeutic purposes.  His work continued with Dr Jean Valnet who wrote a book called Aromatherapie. Marguerite Maurey translated both the works of Professor Gattefosse and Dr Jean Valnet into formulas and recipes that her husband used on his patients. He produced practical evidence about the use and benefits of essential oils.  Marguerite spent a great deal of time in the UK teaching a whole new generation of aromatherapists who continue to practice this form of holistic therapy today.

Aromatherapy has increased in popularity in current times as many people reject the more traditional methods of `popping a pill to obtain a quick cure’ which was more prominent in the 1900s.  Nowadays people are so aware of their own bodies and health and generally more informed on the effects and side-effects of more traditional medicine.
